Imperative vs Declarative: Weathering The Storm with Kyle Simpson
Presented live at Web Unleashed 2024
Overview
You’ve no doubt heard the terms “imperative” and “declarative” before, and you probably know that developers strongly prefer the latter whenever possible. But just how clear are you on what these really mean, when it comes to writing lines of code in your app? Most of us probably just wing it or feel “I know it when I see it.”
Debates have raged for decades on this topic. In this talk, I’ll drive straight into the eye of the storm and try to sift through what it all means for our apps, specifically for the readability and maintainability of our code bases. We’ll look at how these concepts play out in a variety of webdev technologies, from HTML, to CSS, to JS… and more along the way. I hope you’ve brought your raincoat!
Target Audience
Web Developers
Kyle Simpson
Human-Centric Technologist, Getify Austin, USA
Kyle’s mission is to show the world that the culture of empathy and relational information exchange are keys to unlocking the full potential of every human in the workplace. JS and open web technologies are among Kyle’s favorite tools to augment human endeavors.
Kyle has published 11+ books on JS, taught thousands of developers from teams around the world, and his training videos have been watched over 800,000 hours.

AI And The Coming Brand-pocalypse

This man is not an artist. Data-driven images are cool to look at, but they're emotionally empty and flaccid. They are boring and monotonous. There is nothing personal of the creator in them - Only data - So there is _nothing_ that can be gained by examining them. There is nothing to take out of them because there is nothing in them to begin with.

"... There is nothing to take out of them because there is nothing in them to begin with... ". No need for data to get that. That applies to many so called human artists.

Nice video, I love to see such smart minds debate/discussion. But there's one thing that bothers me and it's Misko's mindset... Like any other framework authors, and like himself as a Angular author, there's this mindset that is to think that the problems they're solving are not related to the majority of the problems we actually have. He is so in love with his "invention" as he was with Angular, he is making the same mistake from my perspective which is to think that everybody has that need for performance at the level he is trying to achieve with Qwik. Also, he's also making the same mistake that frameworks are making which is to lock you into the framework's full stack. What if my site is a Ruby on Rails site? In order to get a better experience developing front end, I DON'T HAVE TO CHANGE IT ALL just because we need a good client side for performance. I think 11ty and Astro are trying to solve a part of the problem, which is to delegate to server-side some concerns, like SSR or SSG. Then, you choose the library you want to address the client-side problem. That's the best way to solve the web for me. That full-stack mindset is the one that is getting a little outdated for me. New trends are looking for those parts we used to do back in the days that were forgotten. Especially the Separation of Concerns. Do what you need to do in the Front-end and do what you need to do in the Back-end and try to be reasonable in the strategies to communicate with each other. That's the way of doing things right without having to commit to an entire ecosystem of a framework.

It's impossible to convey how popular the experiences you created in Al Waha are. There are lines daily for the spa. People ask "what has the spa hot to do with the future"? Coming back to centering on us will never be futuristic enough it seems :) You need to come feel that crowds daily! Wonderful to have worked with you on this project Emily!

I just heard about this video in a podcast about the rise of "storyteller." Gotta say I agree. I'm a writer, certainly not setting the world on fire or able to quit my day job yet, but I've been published a handful of times. I would never refer to myself as a "storyteller." I can't imagine any actual writer doing so. Maybe if your stuff is some folksy, campfire Garrison Keillor type deal, you can get away with "storyteller." Otherwise it's just corny. And the way these other people are using it is just lame. Edit: "corny," "lame"...tell me I'm NOT a writer, haha. Oy.
